Beauty's biggest shelf is on TikTok

Open TikTok on any given morning and within five swipes you'll land on a video of someone applying serum in natural window light, or someone doing a side-by-side of two viral moisturisers, or a third person mid-rant about a product that broke them out. Welcome to #BeautyTok, and it isn't a niche corner of the app anymore. It is arguably the single most influential shelf in the beauty industry today, more persuasive than a magazine spread, more trusted than a paid celebrity endorsement, and increasingly, the place where the sale actually happens.
Skin, hair and makeup are inherently visual, tactile categories. People don't just want to be told a product works, they want to watch it work, in real time, on a real face, ideally one that looks like theirs. That is precisely the format TikTok was built for, and that is why any beauty content has to be purpose-built for the platform. So what should a proper beauty campaign look like on the platform? Using our Four Loops methodology, we think about content and media buy across Attention, Amplification, Action and Acceleration.
Attention: earning a spot on the FYP
Before a single product gets added to cart, it has to be seen, and in a way that feels like genuine user-centric content. Beauty audiences on TikTok can smell a traditional ad from a mile away and will scroll straight past it.
Three considerations when planning for your content in this loop:
Content Type
- Brand-owned content is where you educate and build category authority. For example, ingredient breakdown videos explaining what a peptide, ceramide or SPF actually does, launch reveals, or even formulation stories. The downside of any brand content however, is that it will always come across as a brand talking about itself, so it rarely earns trust on its own.
- Creator or user-generated content (UGC) is where the actual discovery happens. Unboxing videos, Get Ready With Me (GRWM) routines, side-by-side comparisons – these work because they are written for the viewer’s point of view and carry more weight when a viewer is discovering a new brand.
Content Ratio
When considering the ratio of UGC to brand-owned content, a useful rule of thumb is to let creators carry the bulk of discovery-stage volume and reserve brand-owned assets for key brand moments like a genuine launch, a reformulation, a collaboration – all of which deserve a hero treatment.
Selecting the right amplifiers
The creators that perform well at this stage are mid-tier skinfluencers and KOCs, who have a relatable and credible point of view. For moments that require a fast spike in performance, using paid tools such as TopView and Top Feed placements can get you in front of your audiences quickly, or provide an edge over competitors who are otherwise fishing in the same UGC pool with the same formats. However it is important to remember that the paid layer exists to buy speed and scale, and not as a crutch to get non-native content to perform.
Y.O.U Beauty, a beauty brand with a footprint across Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines, built exactly this kind of Attention moment around the launch of a new serum ahead of the festive season.
Rather than running a standard product ad, the brand built a UGC-centric branded challenge around a custom jingle, #GlowingXmaswithYOU, turning a new product launch into something the audience could join in on rather than just watch.¹
Amplification: turning proof into paid
This is the loop most in-house teams skip, and it's usually the difference between a brand that has a genuine content engine and one that gets a handful of good posts a quarter.
The golden rule of this loop is simple to describe, but hard to run without a system: Boost what is performing organically, and not what you think will perform, or what was most expensive to produce. Here’s a checklist for when you look at your organic content:
- Is it holding attention longer than your average post?
- Is it generating genuine conversation in the comments section?
- Is it being shared/saved at a rate that suggests people want to come back to it?
Once you've identified it, choose the right paid amplification that best fits your objective. Spark Ads can boost a top-performing organic post (brand-owned or a creator's) without rebuilding it as a separate ad unit, while GMV Max allows TikTok to pool and scale your best-performing content and creators automatically once there is a signal to work with.
Action: closing the loop without leaving the app
Where TikTok has genuinely changed the game for beauty specifically is in collapsing the distance between "I want this" and "I bought this." TikTok Shop lets a viewer go from a swatch demo to checkout without ever leaving the video, and for a category where immediacy matters enormously, that shortened path shows up directly in the numbers.
SKIN1004, the Korean skincare brand known for its Centella Asiatica line, ran a full-funnel campaign in Indonesia that stacked discovery, creator-led trust-building and in-app checkout into one continuous activation:
• Video Views campaign lifted GMV 8.5 times over the brand's previous activity
• Video Shopping Ads reached over 670,000 users at a 6.4x ROAS.
• A follow-up LIVE session and LIVE Shopping Ads also drove a 4.06x ROAS.2
Skincare and colour cosmetics brands running live shopping sessions are seeing a similar dynamic: live formats let a host answer questions, show texture and application in real time, and push straight to purchase, which tends to convert noticeably better than static feed content for this category. Similarly, Korean skincare and haircare brands have shown just how far ingredient education paired with routine-building content can travel when it's backed by a Shop listing rather than a link in bio.
None of this means that every brand needs to go live tomorrow. Rather, it highlights how shortening the purchase pathway from a compelling piece of content is compelling can drive more immediate conversion.
Acceleration: letting the audience do the convincing
Beauty is a category built on scepticism. Most people have been burned by a product that looked incredible in a 15-second ad and did nothing on their actual skin. That scepticism is precisely why TikTok's most effective beauty advertising rarely looks like advertising at all, and why this loop matters as much as the three before it.
The Beauty Story, a Korean skincare reseller based in Singapore, is a good example of what this looks like in practice. Rather than commissioning polished studio ads, the brand worked through TikTok's Creator Marketplace to source and brief creators on videos that opened with a fast, attention-grabbing hook, demonstrated the product honestly, and closed with a clear call to action. That creator-led, native-feeling content fed directly into Catalog Ads and, combined with LIVE Shopping sessions, helped the brand reach up to 12.5x ROAS, without their ads ever feeling like a hard sell.3
The pattern is the same as it is everywhere else in this category: the ad worked because the audience wasn't sure it was an ad. The creators best suited to this loop are your everyday customers, affiliate creators, smaller KOCs, because the job here isn't reach, it's volume of believable proof. That is what feeds straight back into Attention: today's Acceleration content is tomorrow's discovery content for someone who hasn't found you yet.
